KCI Completes Installation of Solar PV and Hot Water System for Research Center in the Arctic Circle

Kreutzman Construction, Inc. has finished installation ahead of schedule on an off-grid power system and a solar hot water system for a Bureau of Land Management research facility in the Arctic Circle near Coldfoot, AK. In addition, the crew completed electrical distribution, underground wiring, and interior wiring for the cabins’ electricity. The PV array, in conjunction with a battery backup system, will provide electricity for four residential cabins and the capacity for a planned fifth cabin. The solar thermal system will provide domestic hot water in a separate utility/washroom cabin. The PV array was ground-mounted using racking from Zilla® utilizing site materials for ballast. Pre-fabricated components greatly reduced the time needed to install the system. The off-grid project posed unique challenges due to the remote location and seasonal temperature fluctuations.
